Ask yourself what claims are being made in this information about
your topic. Summarise claims in your own words using the 'starter'
phrase: This information claims that...
test your claims
Relevance: Does this info relate to one of your knowledge gaps or questions? If not, why are you wasting time on it? Is it really worthwhile in terms of the task at hand?
Accuracy: Is the information accurate? How do you know? Have you found several sources which say the same thing, ie have you confirmed it, e.g. comparing book with website?
Authority: Does this information come from an expert/ authoritative source. For example, information from an encyclopaedia is more likely to be authoritative than information from a 'Geocities' site which may be the work of a student.
Evidence: Are the claims, arguments, ideas, points of view, etc, supported by EVIDENCE?
Opinion? If it is your opinion or point of view, is this opinion supported by any INFORMATION, researched evidence?
Bias: Is the viewpoint one-sided; not balanced with any opposing ideas or evidence?
